The Nordic Scholarship Programme at the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) is now open for applications for 2027 scholarships β with a closing date of 11 October 2026. The programme gives students and researchers engaged in Africa-focused studies at universities in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland the opportunity to spend one month at the Institute in Uppsala, Sweden, with travel, accommodation and a daily subsistence allowance fully covered.

About this opportunity
Through the Nordic Scholarship Programme, NAI aims to build capacity in the production of knowledge about Africa and to promote and establish relations with and between Nordic research communities. The scholarship funds a 1-month stay at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala to:
Facilitate use of the Institute's library collections on contemporary Africa β books, periodicals, newspapers, and government publications
Connect scholarship holders to ongoing work at the Institute through NAI research hosts
The scholarships are awarded once per year. NAI is a Swedish government agency jointly funded by Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and Norway β established in 1962 to promote development-oriented research and international cooperation on African studies.
Financial Benefits
Travel expenses β least expensive fare from your residential address (in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland) to Uppsala and return
Free accommodation β centrally located in Uppsala
Subsistence allowance of SEK 450 per day β roughly SEK 13,500 for the month

Eligibility Criteria
You must be pursuing Africa-oriented studies or research within the social sciences or humanities
You can be a master's student, PhD candidate, postdoctoral, or mid-career researcher
You may apply regardless of citizenship β but you must be affiliated with and based at a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland, both when you apply and when you take up the scholarship
Not eligible: persons currently or previously employed by or otherwise professionally affiliated with the Nordic Africa Institute.

Outline of research project β 3β5 pages:
Objective: the research topic, clearly identified and contextualized within its academic discipline
Method and time frame: research method, data gathering techniques, and time frame
Theoretical explication: a brief indication of the theoretical basis
Work plan β 1 page:
Specific to the time at the Institute β clarify which part of your project you will work on during the stay
Reference β signed letter of support from your supervisor or head of department, confirming current affiliation and field of research
Requirements for all documents: applications and appendices must be in English.
